A survey conducted by YouGov looked to answer this question in March 2012.
Tea emerged as preferred Hot Drink for 52% of Britons; younger generations show more balanced preference for hot beverages
According to the poll, when asked to choose between tea and coffee, tea emerged as the top choice among over half of the British public, while just over a third expressed a preference for coffee.
The poll revealed that 52% of respondents favored tea as their preferred hot drink, while 35% stated a preference for coffee. Additionally, 11% of participants expressed that neither tea nor coffee was their favorite hot beverage, and 3% were undecided or unsure.
Although this preference for tea remained relatively consistent across genders, a slight variation was observed among different age groups. Specifically, the youngest generation of respondents displayed a more even split between the two drinks, with a quarter of them indicating that neither tea nor coffee was their preference.
Among respondents aged 25 and above, more than 50% in each age group (25 to 39, 40 to 59, and 60+) preferred tea over coffee. However, the 18-24 age group exhibited a more balanced preference, with only 39% favoring tea and 30% opting for coffee.
Interestingly, a significant proportion of 18-24 year olds preferred alternative beverages or no hot drink at all. Approximately 24% of this age group stated a preference for neither tea nor coffee, in contrast to only 9% among individuals aged 40 to 59, and 5% among those over 60.
